Course Requirements
1. Each student will work in a group to produce and direct a 20-30 minute documentary video.
2. The documentary must focus on a local or global contemporary social issue or problem. A list of contemporary concerns will be distributed and discussed.
3. All projects must include a proposal, storyboard, typed script, presentation, and approval of the instructor before shooting can begin.
4. Each group of producers/directors have 7 weeks total to complete the project. This means that each group can have no more than 5 hours a week of production (shooting, editing, and field). Each group has a total of 35 hours outside of class to complete the project.
5. The documentary is due on the final exam date, followed by a critique session.
6. Each student must submit a one to two page typed critique of each crew member and producer. This is due on the final exam period along with your documentary.

Attendance

All students must attend every class. Two points are deducted from your grade for every absence. Each student has one unexcused absence.

Assignment 1 - How do I Choose an Effective Topic for a Documentary Video?
Choose a topic and answer the following questions. You must type this paper and present it in class on February 10.

Part A
1. Is there an area in which I am already knowledgeable and even opinionated?
2. Do I feel a strong and emotional connection to the area, more so than any other practical subject?
3. Can I do justice to the subject?
4. Do I have a drive to learn more about this subject?
5. What is the subject's underlying significance to me?
6. What can I find that's unusual and interesting about it?
7. Where is its specialness really visible?
8. How narrowly, and therefore deeply, can I focus my film's attention?
9. What can show?

Part B
On a scale from 1 through 10 (1 being the least and 10 being the most), how controversial is this topic?
Who and how many people would be interested in knowing more about this topic?
What are some possible slants or perspectives to approaching this topic?
How can my video help to inform and create more social responsibility?
What technical ideas and creative ideas can I think of using to help communicate my idea in an effective way? Why use this technical and/or creative approach?

Assignment 2
The assignment's objective is to introduce you to all phases of production before making your final documentary.
For this assignment, each team must write, shoot, produce, and edit a 30 or 60 second public service announcement (PSA). The PSA can be on any legitimate topic, but must include an interview. Some in-class time will be allotted for the writing, shooting, and editing of this assignment.
This assignment is worth 10 points.
CM 360 Advanced Television - Written Proposal and Script Formats for Your Projects
1. All proposals must:
· Be typed. Scripts must also be typed
· Include a storyboard
· Be approved by the instructor before production can begin
2. You must submit a copy of your proposal, script, and shot sheets before videotaping your project
3. After you have an approved proposal, you can begin work on your project. Minor changes will probably be necessary, and you must make decisions about these minor changes on your own. However, remember that the instructor approved a specific idea. If you want to make major changes, you must consult the instructor.
The following pages include the format you should use for your proposal, script, and shot sheets.
Please note the following:
Mistyped scripts and/or proposals that do not use the prescribed formats or are incomplete reduce your overall grade:
· For every mistyped word, 1 point will be deducted.
· Out of format scripts and proposals deduct 20 points.
· Incomplete scripts and proposals deduct 50 points
Be wise and follow format complete assignments, and hand in scripts and paper work you wazzu can be proud of. Carelessness is unprofessional!

Unit 1 - AC Adapter
1. Plug this unit into the wall.
2. Connect DC OUT to VCR's DC IN.
Unit 2 - VCR and Camera Connections
Plug camera cable into VIDEO IN Camera Selector on the VCR, and into the VTR Selector in the Camera.
Unit 3 - TV Monitor and VCR
1. Plug cable into AUDIO OUT on VCR and into AUDIO IN to the TV monitor.
2. Plug cable into VIDEO OUT on VCR and into VIDEO IN to the TV monitor.
Note: Place the switch in back of the TV monitor to OPERATE MODE so that the monitor functions properly.
Unit 4- Microphones
Plug all microphones into the microphone inputs on the VCR, not the camera.


Note the following:
1. Batteries run 2 to 3 hours.
2. Set White.
3. Package your video tapes.
4. Record black on all tapes.
5. Buy your own master tape if possible.
6. Have a sound tech monitor the Audio VU meter.
7. Avoid snow.
