This volume, the third in a series of four, presents the major writings of Cahiers du Cinema in the immediate post-1968 period. It brings together seminal articles that changed the methods and purposes of the study of film. In the years 1969-1972 Cahiers writers were elaborating a major materialist account of the history, theory, and criticism of cinema. They drew on pioneering French research in structuralism, semiotics, psychoanalysis, literary study, and Marxism to define for contemporary film studies a new perspective on filmic representation and on the nature and function of ideological critique.
